Weekly server maintenance: 14th February 2012

One thing I hadn’t realised about BioWare, is that they’re all tragic romantics. That’s why they’ve thoughtfully made this week’s regular maintenance on Valentine’s Day. That way, you can spend some time with the woman / man of your dreams – or at least write a secret admirer note to your favourite SWTOR companion.

Ok, enough silly talk around what’s a normal scheduled maintenance. Here’s the local times you’ll not have game access:

AEDT: 7pm – 11pm Tuesday 14th Feb

AWST: 4pm – 8pm

NZDT: 9pm – 1am

Original details:

Scheduled Maintenance

Date: Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Time: 2AM CST (12AM PST/3AM EST/8AM GMT/9AM CET) until 6AM CST (4AM PST/7AM EST/12PM GMT/1PM CET)

All game servers and SWTOR.com will be offline during this period. This maintenance is expected to take no more than four hours.

Thank you for your patience as we maintain service for Star Wars™: The Old Republic™.

SWTOR oceanic server location confirmed!

You’ll need to listen to our most recent podcast for Stephen Reid’s take on Oceanic servers, but here’s the take-home messages:

1. The servers WILL be physically located in Australia

2. The specific location is unconfirmed at this stage but is likely to be Sydney or Melbourne

3. A broader announcement on local launch will be made in coming days and there will be no great surprises on the launch date.

We’ll have a full transcript of the Q&A up later today, but if you want the info hot off the wires, then listen to the podcast.

Quick patch incoming plus extended maintenance on the 31st January

If you’ve played SWTOR over the past week you’ve probably heard some murmurs of discontent around the game’s performance, if not experiencing it yourself. Actually murmurs have been shouts in some quarters and there’s not doubt BioWare is listening as they’re bringing down the servers sometime Saturday night Australian / New Zealand time – once we have a confirmation of an exact time we’ll post it.

Additionally, there’s an extended weekly maintenance of eight hours or so:

Scheduled Maintenance

Date: Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Time: 2AM CST (12AM PST/3AM EST/8AM GMT/9AM CET) until 10AM CST (8AM PST/11AM EST/4PM GMT/5PM CET)

All game servers and swtor.com will be offline during this period. This maintenance is expected to take no more than eight hours.

So that’s:

- 7pm on Tuesday 31st until 3am Wednesday 1st Feb AEDT
- 4pm to midnight AWST
- 9pm to 5am NZDT

So tonight don’t plan on any extended playing time in SWTOR and Tuesday is out too. Never fear though, we’ll have plenty of SWTOR info for your to trawl through, including a brand new podcast being recorded Sunday night.

SWTOR server queues: it’s about the flow

For those with early access, there’s been a fairly regular issue of queues on most servers.

It’s not surprising by any means, and Bioware state they’re monitoring it closely (I’d be a bit worried if they weren’t!). Stephen Reid has posted an update on the SWTOR forums, on behalf of Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer of Live Services (i.e. Head Server Dude):

“We know there have been questions about the queues on the servers, so we wanted to take a moment to give you some insight.

In order to ensure that the service would be smooth and stable, we staged how we brought people into the Early Game Access program, adding people in waves. As you know, there are a lot of folks who want to play the game right now and we want to make sure they have lots of people to play with. Balancing this with figuring out when to bring new servers online to help alleviate the size of the queues is part art and part science. On one hand, you do not want people to wait too long – on the other hand, you want to make sure that people have a dynamic, engaging community to play with for long after launch. Either way, we have one clear objective – to make sure folks have fun.

While we can’t promise that there won’t ever be queues, we can promise you that we are taking this matter seriously and constantly reviewing them to make sure that they are manageable and reasonable.”

Ironically, the desire for Oceanic players to hang out as a community has arguably increased server queues on the unofficial PvE and PvP servers, meaning Oceanic players are reporting long queues during the day and into early evening. That’s likely to shake out as more servers come on board and some players shift servers.

When it’s all said and done it’s hard to disagree with Jeff Hickman: it’s a balancing act between queues and players wandering around struggling to find people to group with. The only certainty is that Bioware will be doing what they can to find that balance, even if they don’t always get it right.

How have you found the queues so far?
